B’s Tapo Picks — Review
Tapo H500: one box that turns a pile of cameras into a security system — and kills the cloud bill
Connects up to 16 Tapo cameras, stores their footage on a real drive in your house, and upgrades their AI — a one-time box instead of a monthly cloud bill.

B’s verdict: The math only works at 2+ cameras — then it works fast. This is the piece that makes Tapo a system instead of an app full of separate cameras.

How it compares
vs cloud subscriptions (Ring Protect, Nest Aware, Tapo Care): those rent storage and AI back to you monthly, per camera or per home. The H500 is a one-time box; the footage lives in your house.
vs Tapo’s smaller hubs (H100/H200): those are sensor/doorbell chime hubs without the camera recording, SATA expansion, HDMI monitoring or the AI upgrade. The H500 is the camera-system hub.

The honest catches
The 16GB built in is just a starter — budget for a drive (next section). Ethernet is 100 Mbit/s, there’s no Thread, and for a single camera it’s the wrong purchase entirely.
Give it a real drive: Samsung 870 QVO 8TB

The drive that belongs in this hub is the Samsung 870 QVO 8TB SSD, model MZ-77Q8T0B/AM (paid link) — it is the largest drive on TP-Link’s official H500-compatible list. (The H500’s paper max is 16TB, but no larger 2.5″ SATA drive exists.) Specs: 2.5″ SATA III, 7mm, 560/530 MB/s, 2,880 TBW endurance, 3-year warranty. Owners rate it 9.6/10 from 20,874 ratings (pricehistory.app).

Reviewer rule of thumb from H500 coverage: roughly 20 days of 24/7 recording per 1TB across four cameras — so 8TB works out to around 160 days at that load. Workload-dependent, and event-only recording stretches far longer.
Compatibility warning: the biggest 2.5″ hard drive — Seagate’s 5TB BarraCuda (ST5000LM000) — is officially incompatible with the H500. Do not pair them.
The 870 QVO’s price moves around a lot — see the link for the current price.
B’s verdict
The hub is the piece that makes Tapo a system. Buy it with the drive and stop thinking about storage.
